Dept Fair Trading’s Preventive Child Safety Initiative For Windows In Strata

Know of anyone living in, owning or doing work in a townhouse or unit block? It is an unfortunate statistic that each year, around 50 children fall from windows or balconies in Australia. Consequently many suffer serious injuries.

The Dept of Fair Trading has their deadline set for 13 March 2018 in an effort to prevent children falling from unlocked windows. Strata schemes must have window safety devices installed on all applicable windows. If a window is able to be opened and the internal floor level is higher than 2m above the surface of the ground externally and it is within a child’s reach – less than 1.7m above the inside floor, then a safety device must be installed.

A window that can be opened and is located higher than 1.7m above the floor does not require a window safety device.

The devices must enable the maximum opening to be less than 12.5cm.

More details on the required window devices can be found here: http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ftw/Tenants_and_home_owners/Strata_schemes/Window_and_balcony_safety/Window_safety_device_requirements.page?

In some instances where the windows are substandard and have suffered oxidisation and ageing effects from weather, these may be defitted and replaced.
